A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.

Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) are a unique power generation technology. Historically, they have been reduced to a small niche in commercial wind turbines due to their "no yaw" design. Its design includes the main motor shaft set transverse to the wind speed. The advanced nature of the VAWT design allows the major components of the turbine to be located on its base. With this arrangement, maintenance of the turbine is very easy as the main components such as generator and gearbox are located very close to the ground. This will reduce maintenance costs. In addition to this, the VAWT is not designed to point in the direction of the wind; therefore, it does not require wind sensing and orientation mechanisms. Wind turbines with vertical axes are starting to become more popular as a localized method of generating electricity, especially for new buildings. The benefit of vertical axis turbines is that they can be placed closer to the ground and are ideal for rooftop arrays.
